It is hard to look at the price tag of T-Shirt when you know transport cost for it.
From Asia to Europe it is only 2,5USD cents. Pretty cheap ha? Cause that price was softened by amount transported from one part of the world to another.
Though the total price for bringing vessel through several seas can escalate to 1 mln USD. These are different costs.
The major spending is FUEL.
Companies are working on many different solutions. Dozens of smart people investigating sea waves, hull resistance in different conditions. Performance guys monitor graphs on a daily basis saving every drop of oil, every gramme of CO2.
But they are doing it remotely. Thus it is not efficient.
Their biggest challenge is the vessel's crew.
When vessel is not underway, the main engine is not working. It's that simple.
Imagine situation that vessel was instructed to arrive in point "P" to pick up Pilot at 22:00. Vessel was on track doing 18 knots. 2 hours prior arrival(I'll do math for you - 36 miles) message was received. New ETA for "P" is 08:00.
Decisions, decision, decisions....
Captain knows that slower vessel goes, the less fuel is consumed.
It's called "Slow Steaming". But the minimum speed for that huge ship is 10 knots.
Not bad, some may think. For the next 4 hours boat can sail even slower. Arrive at point "P", Drop anchor, stop engines, stay idle for 7 hours, pick-up pilot and enter the port. Applicable for fairy tale or when robots are on board.
Dropping anchor means that Captain and Chief Engineer have to go to bed around 01:00 and wake-up around 06:00. Not applicable.
Instead officer on the watch can circle around and kill time while everybody can get quality sleep.
Good sleep is expensive. Starts at 20000+USD per night for the industry.
